The Rhaetian Railway is world-famous for its breathtaking railway lines with spectacular views
Anyone travelling on the Bernina Express from Chur to Lugano or the Glacier Express from St. Moritz to Zermatt will never forget the journey. Founded in 1889, the railway transports almost 10 million passengers every year. On 29 October 2022, the RhB set the world record for the longest passenger train in the world (1,910 metres) from the Albula Tunnel over the Landwasser Viaduct to Alvaneu with 25 four-car Capricorn multiple-unit trains.
The challenge
Nine tenths of the railway network was built before 1914, one fifth runs over or through engineering structures such as tunnels or viaducts. This is why RhB has to invest heavily in the maintenance of its infrastructure (2014: CHF 214 million). RhB business, division and project managers as well as external architects and construction managers are involved in the major projects. This makes the financial and operational management and control of infrastructure projects and reporting to the Federal Office of Transport (FOT) challenging.
Our solution
We have developed a multi-client-capable platform for cost control that supports RhB from the loan application to rolling planning and post-calculation, standardises all processes and generates FOT-compliant reports. Among other things, the open platform has interfaces to basware, PSIpenta or SAP and to Microsoft Teams for project communication and document exchange. The intuitive dashboard makes work child's play and visualises opportunity/risk analyses, for example.

All project participants have full cost control, depending on their access rights. You can change project views and configure reports dynamically or generate them automatically. The dashboard provides a clear overview of the status and supports well-founded decisions. The platform also generates complex analyses and FOT-compliant statistics. With this solution, RhB has set a standard and assumed system leadership for the management of cross-organisational projects in the RAILplus network.
